Printer error puts 2 due dates on some bills Thursday, August 03, 2006 Chicago Sun-Times by STEVE PATTERSON Staff Reporter The confusion started in the bottom corner of Mary Lou Trudeau's property tax bill. The Park Ridge senior citizen knows her bill is due Sept. 1, and that was confirmed in bold print at the top of her bill. But in a gray box below, a note said the bill is due Oct. 1. The confusion, Treasurer Maria Pappas said, was caused by a printer malfunction. While she isn't sure how many bills were affected, her office has received only a handful of calls asking about the discrepancy since tax bills began arriving this week. Late fee possible With about a third of all tax bills automatically paid by mortgage companies, and the correct date more prominently featured on the bill, Pappas isn't expecting great confusion. Still, she said, she'll take out ads in newspapers to emphasize the correct payment date because a late fee could be assessed for late payments. "We could send out a postcard, but I'm afraid it might just become junk mail," she said. "It might confuse people even more." Pappas said the problem happened with just one of several printers the county uses to prepare tax bills. That explains why Trudeau's bill has two dates, but her sister's does not. "I know it's Sept. 1, but there may be some senior citizen out there who really doesn't understand," she said.
