We are disturbed by today’s reports in the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times of staff members at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center encouraging kids to settle their disputes through fist-fighting. It was reported that 348 fights took place at the detention center since April. Certain staff members encouraged kids to settle their disputes through violence by sending kids into “Room 18” or the “Gladiator Room.” These allegations come on the heels of a report by the U.S. Justice Department that the Cook County Juvenile Center has the highest incidences of sexual misconduct in the nation. The ACLU of Illinois has posted on its website two recently released reports on the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center. The reports were complied by two independent, court-ordered monitors:
