Old County Hospital again on historically endangered list

Thursday, March 10, 2005
Chicago Sun-Times

The old Cook County Hospital and Jewelers Row District were two city-based sites designated Wednesday as this year's "most endangered historic places" in the state by the Landmark Preservation Council of Illinois.

The now-closed Cook County Hospital made the council's list three times before in 2001, 2003 and 2004. No decision has been made about the building's fate, said Caryn Stancik, a spokeswoman for Cook County Board President John Stroger.

The county recently hired U.S. Equities to conduct a full-scale analysis to assess hospital needs as well as proposals for potential uses of the old building, which costs $400,000 a month to maintain. It closed in December 2002.

Other Chicago area sites making the 2005 list were the River Forest Women's Club, the Westgate Street retail district in Oak Park and the Zook Home and Studio in Hinsdale. Also selected were University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Lincoln Hall, Old Lincoln School in Rock Island, Tuscan Lodge in Carbondale, Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria, Gillett Memorial Arch in Elkhart and the above-ground Veterans Memorial Pool in Dixon.

For the last 10 years, the council has presented the list to bring attention to buildings and neighborhoods threatened by deterioration, poor maintenance, insufficient funds, development and public policy.
