Cook County public defender to discuss 17 percent budget cutTuesday, December 26, 2006
WQAD.com/Moline CHICAGO On Monday, Cook County State's Attorney Dick Devine said the 17 percent budget cuts being requested by county officials could lead to more crime.
Today, his counterpart, Cook County Public Defender Edwin Burnette, will discuss new information he says he has about the proposed cuts.
County Board President Todd Stroger (STROH'-jer) has asked department heads to trim their budgets by the 17 percent to help balance a 500 (M) million dollar county deficit.
Devine says hundreds of prosecutors will have to be laid off and special units that handle financial crimes, arson and other investigations could be eliminated.
Stroger said yesterday that it is "irresponsible" for county officials to battle over the budget through the news media.
