New bike trail in preserves approved Thursday, April 05, 2007 Daily Herald by Rob Olmstead The Cook County Forest Preserve Wednesday OK’d the release of nearly $1 million to complete the extension of the Algonquin Road bicycle trail near Penny Road in the northwest suburbs. The new portion of the trail will create a loop around the Paul Douglas Preserve at Algonquin and Roselle Roads, said Dave Kircher, chief landscape architect for the district. A spur along that section will connect the Ameritech campus to the trail, he added. The other new section will extend from Algonquin Road through the Crabtree Preserve to Palatine Road, Kircher told board members. The project should be completed in about a year and a half. In addition to the county’s $964,310 contribution to the project, the Illinois Department of Transportation will pony up $1,023,905 provided by an Illinois FIRST grant.
