Todd Stroger to take medical leave
Expects to be out 2 or 3 weeks after 'routine' procedure

Monday, June 18, 2007

Cook County Board President Todd Stroger has been hospitalized for a planned "routine medical procedure" and will be on medical leave for between two and three weeks, spokesmen said this afternoon.
Stroger, 44, had been hospitalized as of Monday morning and will be hospitalized overnight, spokeswoman Ibis Antongiorgi said.
Stroger will be in daily contact with his chief of staff, Lance Tyson, and remain in control of county operations, Antongiorgi said. President pro tem Mario Moreno (D-Chicago) will run the county board meeting Tuesday.
She declined to say what procedure Stroger had done or where he is hospitalized. More information might be made available later today she said.
"He’s having a routine medical procedure and he’s asked us to respect his privacy," Antongiorgi said. "It's not serious."
When Stroger’s father and predecessor, John Stroger, suffered a stroke in March 2006, county government was thrown into an uproar for months as his chief, Jim Whigham, insisted Stroger remained in control of government despite numerous reports that he was too ill to do so.
