Property tax bills for most will be lower this year, then increase in '08
Enjoy it while it lasts...

Enjoy that property tax bill when it arrives in a few days.
Because while most Chicago homeowners will see a slightly decreased bill this year, it's likely to go up next year, officials said Monday.
How much less -- or more -- you'll have to pay this year depends on where you live, but a series of actions Monday set plans in motion to allow property tax bills to be mailed out.
Bills are due by Dec. 3, one of the latest due dates county officials could recall.
That's because of a state battle over just how much relief homeowners should get in coming years. Once the Legislature agreed on a 7-percent cap plan, the County Board met Monday to approve it.
74% to save up to $250
Once that happened, Clerk David Orr's office released tax rates, and now Treasurer Maria Pappas' staff members are furiously working to prepare, print and mail the tax bills.
The process of figuring tax bills is a complicated one, but you can find your tax rate -- the base used to eventually compute your bill -- at www.cookctyclerk .com.
Assessor James Houlihan's office said about 74 percent of Chicago homeowners will see a decrease of $1 to $250 this year. But unfortunately, they will see increases in that same range next year.
