Shoppers pay less, tanners pay more Thursday, July 01, 2010

by Lisa Donovan Get ready to have a few more coins jangling in your pockets,
shoppers.
Starting today, Cook County's share of the sales tax rolls back a
half-penny on the dollar.
And the state's minimum hourly wage rises a quarter to $8.25.
Cook County commissioners pushed through the giveback in the run-up
to the February primary.
The new rate -- 9.75 percent -- still maintains our standing with Los
Angeles as having the highest sales tax in the nation.
Tanners can expect to spend a little more, though. A new 10 percent
federal tax on tanning services takes effect. It was included in the
health care reform law.
