by Zoe Barker The Cook County Jail has a new laundry program that gives inmates who are U.S. military veterans a chance at a "clean start."
The "Clean Start" program was developed as a way to save money previously spent on laundry service by an outside vendor.
The former contract, which expired in September, cost the jail $1.5 million over the two years it was in effect. The new self-sustaining program comes at no cost to taxpayers and will be 13 percent cheaper for the jail.
The start-up expenses, such as five industrial-grade washers and dryers, were covered by profits from goods sold to inmates from the jail commissary. A group of 20 inmates was chosen for their consistent good behavior and non-violent backgrounds.
