Preckwinkle: More money for summer jobs for youth in high-crime areasMonday, June 18, 2012

by LISA DONOVAN Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle said Monday that another $120,000 will be funneled to a city-county summer youth jobs program aimed at putting kids in high-crime communities to work.
So far, the county has directed $145,000 in grant money to One Summer Plus Chicago, a combined city-county initiative that will Preckwinkle said will help 700 Chicago teens who live in high-crime areas of the city. Jobs will be offered in government and private business, and Preckwinkle also said money will be used to hire mentors for at-risk youths. “It’s important to do more to keep our children out of harm’s way and in a safe place,” Preckwinkle said at the morning press conference.
