On Saturday, May 1, 2004, Cook County Forest Preserve District Commissioner Larry Suffredin, 13th District, was joined by more than 80 volunteers for a workday at Miami Woods Forest Preserve in Morton Grove.
Volunteers cut and cleared large quantities of buckthorn, producing a brush pile that was 150 feet long beside the bike path. The volunteers also collected some 30 bags of garlic mustard and trash. "Removing invasive buckthorn and garlic mustard will return sunlight to the ground and encourage native flowers and grasses to recover," commented Miami Woods Master Steward Kent Fuller.
"Restoration activities and ongoing land management of our Forest Preserves are vital to maintaining healthy land, supporting animal habitats, and preserving the fragile local ecosystem," Commissioner Suffredin told volunteers.
Kent and Jerry Fuller, Stewards at Miami Woods, along with volunteers from the North Branch Restoration Project, Friends of the Morton Grove Forest Preserves, and Friends of the Forest Preserves helped Commissioner Suffredin organize the volunteer workday.
Volunteers included youth and adults from Senn High School located in Chicago, New Trier High School, Glenview Boy Scout Troop #56, Chicago Wilderness, and concerned citizens from the 13th District.
