85 Community Members Joined Suffredin for Local Work DayMonday, May 24, 2004 Special to suffredin.org On Sunday, May 16, 2004 Cook County Forest Preserve District Commissioner Larry Suffredin was joined by 85 volunteers for a work day at Harms Woods Forest Preserve in Glenview.
Volunteers pulled garlic mustard and filled more than 75 trash bags. An invasive species originally from Europe, garlic mustard chokes out native plants reducing the diversity and health of our local forests and woodlands.
While pulling garlic mustard, North Branch Restoration Project members talked to the volunteers about the abundant wildflowers that were in bloom. As a designated restoration work site for 16 years, many sections of Harms Woods are examples of how native plants and wildlife can thrive in our Forest Preserves when the land is properly managed.
John and Jane Balaban, Harms Woods Stewards, along with volunteers from the North Branch Restoration Project, Friends of the Morton Grove Forest Preserves, and Friends of the Forest Preserves helped Commissioner Suffredin organize the volunteer workday.
Volunteers included youth and adults from Senn High School located in Chicago, Chicago Wilderness, the Chicago Botanic Garden, Northwestern University, the Nature Conservancy, and concerned citizens from the 13th District.
A work day was held in Maimi Woods and over 80 volunteers participated for a combined 2 day total of nearly 170 volunteers working with Commissioner Suffredin to improve the forest preserves.
