A letter from Dr. Jay Shannon regarding gun violence and Stroger Hospital

Tuesday, August 07, 2018
Special to suffredin.org
by Dr. Jay Shannon

Dear Commissioners,

As I am certain you are aware, Stroger received an unusually high number of gunshot victims this weekend which brought an unusually high number of visitors. We needed to limit visitors to immediate family to allow staff to focus on patient care. Despite media reports, at no point did Stroger go on bypass or lockdown. We simply limited visitation. We were able to correct several stories but others continued to report a lockdown and attributed it to the Chicago Police Department. Stroger Hospital has not gone on bypass since the day we opened the new hospital in 2002. To my knowledge, we have never locked the hospital down which would occur only in very limited circumstance as defined by hospital policy. As a Level I trauma center, we are committed to being here for every patient, every day.

Below is the media statement we issued.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Jay

CCHHS Statement Issued August 5, 2018

Over the past 24 hours, Stroger's trauma unit received an unusually high volume of patients. At no time did Stroger go on bypass or 'lockdown' its trauma unit.

We are asking the families of trauma patients to limit visitation at this time to immediate family members only so staff may focus on patient care.
