A woman in her 20s is among the eight Illinoisans who died of COVID-19 Sunday, as the state announced nearly 1,400 new cases.

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Sunday reported 1,382 new confirmed coronavirus cases and eight additional deaths.

Seven of those deaths occurred in Cook County, including the woman in her 20s. Others who died included a woman and man in their 40s, a man in his 50s, and three people in their 60s.

The IDPH said there have been 194,080 total COVID-19 cases reported and 7,636 deaths across 102 counties in Illinois.

Labs statewide over the past 24 hours tested 41,354 specimens, according to the IDPH, bringing the statewide total to 3,073,988.

Sunday’s case total comes a day after the IDPH reported the state's highest single day increase of COVID-19 cases in more than two months with 2,190 cases.

Illinois also had more than 2,000 new cases Friday, which marked the first time the state topped that mark since May 24. With case totals increases across the state, Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced new rules and fines Friday for businesses and schools that repeatedly ignore COVID-19 restrictions and mask requirements.

“This is a make or break moment for the state of Illinois, for making sure people are doing everything they can to mitigate, to reduce the spread,” he said. “This is a moment for us to enforce the masking requirement across the state.”

According to the IDPH, the state's seven-day positivity percentage from Aug. 2-8 is 4.1% As of Saturday, there were 1,488 Illinois residents reported to be hospitalized with COVID-19. Of those, 322 were in the ICU and 114 were on ventilators.

Note: This story was originally published Saturday. It has been updated to reflect new COVID-19 figures released Sunday by the IDPH.
