More than 400 Cook County Jail inmates shifted when air conditioning overheats

More than 400 Cook County Jail inmates had to be shifted to different facilities Friday night when air conditioning units in the building they were housed in overheated.

The air conditioning went out about 8:30 p.m. in the jail’s Pre-Release Center Building at 3026 S. California Ave., according to Cook County Sheriff spokesman Frank Bilecki.

The building houses minimum security individuals who are usually in the jail for roughly 120 to 180 days for drug rehabilitation programs, Bilecki said.

Ninety-three detainees were moved to a boot camp building, while the remaining 352 detainees were moved over to a neighboring building.

The air conditioning units still aren’t working, Bilecki said Saturday, but crews continued working to fix the issue.

“I think they overheated,” Bilecki said. “They were working for a while and I think they’re going to hopefully be back to working in a few days.”
