Preckwinkle creates council to help create jobs in tough economy

Thursday, July 19, 2012

by LISA DONOVAN

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced Thursday she’s creating a council of economic advisors to figure out how to lure businesses and create jobs across the region in a sluggish economy.

John W. Rogers, Chairman and CEO of Ariel Investments, and William A. Osborn, retired Chairman of the Northern Trust Corporation, will serve as co-chairs of the 21-member council, according to Preckwinkle’s office.

Drawing on the insights of some of the region’s biggest business honchos, Preckwinkle’s staff says she’s looking at ways to compete as a region — rather than see suburban communities poach businesses from one another.

The goal, her staff said, is to expand economic development in the county and the wider region.

Other members if the council include:

? Paula Allen-Meares, Chancellor, University of Illinois at Chicago

? Frank Clark, retired Chairman & CEO, ComEd

? Sue Ling Gin, Chairman and CEO, Flying Food Group; President and Founder, New Management Ltd.

? Roberto Herencia, President and CEO, BXM Holdings

? Julie Howard, CEO, Navigant Consulting

? Stacy Janiak, Managing Partner in Chicago’s Deloitte office

? Aylwin Lewis, President and CEO, Potbelly Sandwich Works

? Michael Moskow, Vice Chairman and Senior Fellow on the Global Economy, Chicago Council on Global Affairs; retired President and CEO, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago

? Sheila O’Grady, Consultant, Spencer Stuart; Former President, Illinois Restaurant Association

? Richard Price, Chairman and CEO, Mesirow Financial, and an investor in Sun-Times parent company Wrapports LLC.

? Jorge Ramirez , President, Chicago Federation of Labor

? Michael Sacks, CEO, Grosvenor Capital Management, L.P., and a Wrapports board member

? Sam Scott, retired Chairman, President and CEO, Corn Products International

? Alejandro Silva, Chairman and CEO, Evans Food Group

? James Skogsbergh, President and CEO, Advocate Health Care

? Michael Tang, Vice-Chairman, Tang Industries; CEO, National Material

? Kevin Willer, President and CEO, Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center

? David Yeager, Chairman and CEO, Hub Group
