Ex-Chicago alderman, ex-county formally indicted with corruption following June arrestsThursday, July 26, 2012 Chicago Tribune CHICAGO (AP) — A federal grand jury has formally indicted a former Chicago alderman and a former Cook County commissioner for alleged corruption.
Thursday's 10-count indictment accuses the former alderman, Ambrosio Medrano, and the one-time commissioner, Joseph Moreno, of trying to accept kickbacks in schemes that included selling bandages to public hospitals.
The 59-year-old Moreno is charged with three counts of bribery, two counts of wire fraud and one count each of extortion and conspiracy to commit extortion. The 58-year-old Medrano faces two counts of wire fraud and one count each of bribery and conspiracy to commit bribery.
Medrano's attorney, Gal Pissetzky, says his client intends to plead not guilty. Moreno's lawyer, Richard Kling, didn't immediately return messages seeking comment.
The men were released on secured bonds after their June arrests.
