Cook County offers property tax appeal seminar for Evanston residents

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

EVANSTON – Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Cook County Board Review CommissionerMichael Cabonargi and Evanston Township Assessor Bonnie Wilson will host a property tax assessment seminar from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30. Co-sponsoring the event are Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky, State Sens. Jeff Schoenberg and Heather Steans, and State Reps. Robyn GabelDaniel Bliss and Kelly Cassidy.

The seminar will aim to help Evanston residents learn how to gather the necessary information when appealing property tax assessments. During the seminar, residents will be informed on how to determine whether they were overassessed, where to gather evidence for an appeal and how to fill out and file the assessment complaint for 2012.

Taxpaying residents are encouraged to bring their tax bill, assessment notice or property identification number to the seminar to complete and submit complaint forms at the seminar.

“Appealing your property tax assessment to the Cook County Board of Review is one of the best ways to keep your property taxes as low as possible,” said Commissioner Suffredin in a recent press release. “I encourage every Evanston homeowner to submit an appeal to the Board of Review every year.”

Appeals can also be completed by visiting the Cook County Board of Review online, or in person at the main or Skokie office. The main office is located at the County Building, room 601, 118 Clark St. in Chicago. The Skokie office is located at 5600 Old Orchard Road, room 155.

For more information call the office of Commissioner Larry Suffredin at 847-864-1209, or the Office of Evanston Township Assessor at 847-332-2465.
