South, southwest suburbs getting grants to beef up security

Friday, August 30, 2019
Daily Southtown

Some south and southwest suburbs are in line for hundreds of thousands of dollars in grants aimed at supporting terrorism preparedness, according to the Cook County Department of Homeland Security.

The money comes from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Urban Areas Security Initiative program. FEMA is part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The grant program, according to FEMA, is intended to assist “high-threat, high-density urban areas in efforts to build and sustain the capabilities necessary to prevent, protect against, mitigate, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism.”

In fiscal year 2019, according to FEMA, $590 million in grant money was available. Grant money will be distributed to suburban communities this month, according to the county.

Locally, Calumet City was awarded $13,700 to buy personal protective equipment for first responders, and Calumet Park is receiving $5,500 to upgrade security of the village’s water supply, according to the county.

Chicago Heights was awarded just under $4,000 to buy medical supplies such as tourniquets and gauze, and Dolton will receive $30,000 to be used to upgrade security of that city’s water supply, according to the county.

Lansing is receiving a bit more than $300,000 for general security enhancements throughout the village, and Oak Forest is being awarded nearly $300,000 to build a 150-foot radio transmission tower to upgrade emergency communication, according to the county.
