These pictures show two of the target work areas for the day. The invading buckthorn creates a dense shade that blocks sunlight and kills the understory. Removing the buckthorn allows sunlight to reach the ground, so that native grasses and wildflowers flourish once more. On Saturday, April 23, 2005, Commissioner Suffredin, together with the North Branch Restoration Project and Friends of the Morton Grove Forest Preserves, sponsored a workday at Linne Woods in Morton Grove in celebration of Earth Day. Thirty-five individuals participated in the workday that largely focused on removing European buckthorn from an oak woodland.
